Recently, I was asked what kind of photographer I am – pro, hobbyist, serious amateur. Admittedly, I’ve not given this much thought, as labels aren’t very interesting to me. I enjoy photography, enjoy exercising my imagination, and enjoy cameras of all sorts. I don’t specialise because I consider it restrictive.
I’ve sold photographs and been paid at events, but I don’t consider myself a professional. Photographs don’t pay my bills. Besides, I’d not want the life sucked out of my photographic practice by turning it into anything other than a fun hobby. I’ve done that in other domains and paid the steep personal price of monetisation.
So, there you have it – if a label applies at all, I’m an eager hobbyist. Make of that what you will, if it’s important.
I’m not a highly technical or mathematically oriented person, so you won’t find endless gear reviews or dilemmas about effective apertures and hyperfocal distances. I touch on these subjects now and then, but I approach image making intuitively, emotionally, mindfully, and with intent. I don’t know everything, and I’m happy to admit mistakes. In this sense, I try to approach the subject of photography as an honest communicator who continues to learn and change.
